Detroit digital

SAT 20 | All EDM devotees out there will be pleased to hear that Nomad Club is delivering their first dedicated techno night, Tweak, this Saturday. Andy Freak (Eastern Bloc Records) and Airfix Twin (Flux, Beach of the Peace) will own the decks with slow-burning, consciously crafted soundscapes. If you like your beats German and your techno Detroit-style, get along for a night of proper tuneage.

WHO: Andy Freak & Airfix Twin
WHAT: Techno night
WHERE: Nomad Club, #46-48 St. 172
WHEN: 11pm, June 20
WHY: In lieu of just popping down to Detroit in the late ‘80s, this should substitute nicely.

Back to Bach

SUN 21 | The Piano Shop presents its 6th Classical Concert Series this Sunday with a special emphasis on Bach – and not just the one. The night will showcase renditions of pieces by all four Bach family musicians: J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, J.C. Bach and Friedemann Bach. And here you were thinking there was just one genius behind the name. Sit back and enjoy some old-school masterpieces that’ll make the Golden ‘60s seem like modern hits.

WHO: Pianist & flutists
WHAT: Classical Concert Series 6
WHERE: Meta House, #37 Sothearos Blvd.
WHEN: 8pm, June 21
WHY: Pay homage to one of the most respected musical dynasties in history.

Short & sweet

MON 22 | If you haven’t been to a Nerd Night lately, it’s worth a revisit.  And if this year’s previous installments are anything to go by, you can expect a wide-ranging variety of topics covered in rapid quick-fire succession. Whether you want to know more about the ruins of Angkor, or the importance of motorbikes in ‘90s RnB music videos, these guys have you covered. If nothing else, it’s a nice breather from booze-fuelled shit-talking in a noisy venue (mostly).

WHO: Fast-talkers & thirsty minds
WHAT: 4 X 20-20 slide presentations
WHERE: Cabaret Restaurant, #159 St. 154
WHEN: 7:30pm, June 22
WHY: Feed your mind, quench your thirst.

Popping corks & tunes

WED 24 | Miss Sarawan & Joe Wrigley are Phnom Penh’s power music duo of late. If you haven’t yet seen them perform at their other regular haunts (or if you have and loved it), check them out as they fill the St. 244 alley with their upbeat acoustic rhythm and vocals. The Alley Bar crew believe it’s an event that is in itself ——cause for celebration, offering free flow Lanson champagne to all who attend from 6-7pm. With that in mind, we’re so not going to disagree with them on this one.

WHO: Miss Sarawan & Joe Wrigley
WHAT: Champagne & live music
WHERE: The Alley Bar, #82 St. 244
WHEN: 6pm, June 24
WHY: Free flow music and bubbles

Viet nuong

Ganh, the new Vietnamese eatery on Street 294, is an import from Ho Chi Minh City, where the restaurant has three locations and a reputation for good nem nuong, or grilled pork sausage. The Phnom Penh menu includes noodles, salads, rolls and Nha Trang-style seafood, but the specialty is the nem nuong. Number 3 on the menu – special grilled ball pork/grilled minced pork cane – comes served on bamboo leaves and includes two kinds of nem nuong, mint, basil, two kinds of lettuce, lots of veggies and rice paper. It’s a roll-your-own affair and easily enough for two people, so bring a friend. Ganh, #49 Street 294.

Art questions politics

FRI 12 | Eng Rithchandaneth and Mok Sombo have spent the last two months in a joint residency at Sa Sa Art Projects at The White Building where they’ve been researching the political history and literature of Cambodia. Daneth explores symbols in hand gestures and communication, raising questions of power, social order and the politics of Cambodia’s aid dependency. Daneth asks, “For what or who do we work so hard every day and night? Power, ourselves, our families, our leader, or our country?” Sombo, meanwhile, considers politics and power with performances and videos that highlight the legitimacy of the voting system. He asks, “When power takes over, does it also tear down?” On Friday, the artists will open their work to the public at The White Building.

WHO: Eng Rithchandaneth & Mok Sombo
WHAT: Open Studio
WHERE: #26-28 E2, The White Building, Sothearos Blvd.
WHEN: 6-8pm, June 12
WHY: A powerful look at government structures through the eyes of local artists.
